Big Murray Cod

The Big Murray Cod in Tocumwal, New South Wales, is one of the earliest big things anywhere in the country. Installed back in 1968, the cod - or Goodoo, the Aboriginal name for the fish - represents what this area of Australia is most famous for. In 1967, the Women’s Auxiliary of Tocumwal Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture decided that the town needed something to put on the map. Several of the women held dances, card nights, and more to raise the money to build and install the giant fish. Made by the Duralite Company in Melbourne, the Big Murray Cod is made of Fiberglass and required an eight-piece mould to get the design right. Inside, the skeleton is made of steel truss and strutting, holding the outer shell in place.

Tocumwal Town Beach

Tocumwal Town Beach Camping Area is a great spot by the river with potable water, toilets and cold showers for a budget price. The caretaker is on-site to collect fees. Reasonably flat for motorhomes, caravans and tents. There is plenty of wood for campfires. The river is good for splashing around but be careful of the strong undertow. The town is within walking distance of supplies. A Farmers Market is held on the 3rd Saturday of the month on the Anglican Church grounds. The Foreshore Market days are huge but you will have to look up the internet for the dates as they vary and do not follow a certain time of the month. There is also the Rotary Garage Sale and Op Shops on Murray Street.
